Photographer Matthew Stone shot these images from high up in an unfinished building as the Red Hook Crit bike race wound its way around the construction site below. “Being that high up and feeling exposed in the hollow concrete structure was quite peculiar. I was so disconnected from the noise and intensity of the race. Only the Race Commissionaire and I had access to the building, so I was completely alone, hundreds of feet above the action, peering down like a god through the security netting and getting used to operating my camera with a hard hat, glasses and safety gloves on.” The resulting photos are oddly calm and painterly, a quiet counterpoint to the sweat and speed of the race itself.
